And yet, they don&#8217;t invest in just improving their existing solutions, but they constantly strive to <strong>intercept new customer needs<\/strong> and provide innovative, out-of-the-box solutions to those needs.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, also when this means taking on a challenge and coming up with an <strong>entirely new product<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s what <a href=\"https:\/\/acumbamail.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Acumbamail<\/a> did in <strong>launching <a href=\"https:\/\/gumbamail.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gumbamail<\/a><\/strong>, a side project that answered user needs so well as to gather hundreds of users in a very short time. Let&#8217;s deep dive into this project, through the words of its very own team, and shed light on how innovation gets done at Growens.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is Gumbamail?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gumbamail is Acumbamail\u2019s recently launched side project<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 A Chrome extension to <\/span><b>send email marketing campaigns right from users&#8217; Gmail inbox with valuable features<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as an embedded drag &amp; drop email template editor, +260 customisable email templates, or real-time reporting. It is available on the <a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/email-marketing-campaigns\/anpdgilpfngjdnolgofhlekehojfgdbm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chrome Web Store<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-213662 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/gumbamail-logo.png\" alt=\"Gumbamail logo\" width=\"511\" height=\"99\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/gumbamail-logo.png 511w, https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/gumbamail-logo-300x58.png 300w, https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/gumbamail-logo-70x14.png 70w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 511px) 100vw, 511px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this article, we will guide you through the journey from why we chose to go for a Chrome extension to how we launched the product and what lies ahead.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why a chrome extension<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>The perks of a marketplace<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0First of all, we considered what launching a product on the marketplace entailed and we noticed many perks, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fact that it is a <\/span><b>fast-growing market\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The possibility to reach your audience in <\/span><b>different languages<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> easily<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That it is <\/span><b>available on most countries<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Not an oversaturated niche in email marketing<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Chrome extension store is not an oversaturated niche in email marketing, for the time being at least. There are considerably<\/span><b> fewer competitors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the email sector and they all benefit from a good number of downloads and reviews. Besides, SEO for a regular website has become increasingly difficult, while SEO efforts for the Chrome Web Store pay off quite quickly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Competitive analysis<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Main competitors<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first thing we did was <\/span><b>researching the email marketing landscape<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the marketplace. In this niche, the main competitors we found were Gmass, Mailking, Yet Another Mail Merge, and Mailmeteor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Competitor analysis<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once we pinpointed our main competitors, we <strong>carried out a complete analysis<\/strong> to look into what they were doing in terms of:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Features\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advertising and Content Strategies<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Number of downloads, reviews, and overall rating<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, we took this into account to <strong>consider our competitive advantage<\/strong> on the market and integrated it into the development and the Chrome Store Optimisation process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Development\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Launching a minimum viable product<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Launching our extension as a <strong>Minimum Viable Product (MVP)<\/strong> was paramount, mainly because we wanted to test out first if there was a real need on the market and check users\u2019 responses. Our objective was also to start building our brand identity as product design went on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the development side, the case for launching an MVP was, simply put, practical: <strong>Gumbamail is integrated<\/strong> with some fundamental tools to run (we will go through those in a bit). As successful as the implementation might seem at first, it is not until the extension is tested on a real scenario when we can actually check everything\u2019s in place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, let us not forget that the extension has to go through a <strong>Google validation process<\/strong> and there\u2019s a possibility that your product might never be approved, so it is better to take the risk upfront with a somewhat less polished product.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That being said, we knew what we wanted our MVP to include and that was:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>A full<\/strong> <\/span><b>email sending workflow<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A secure account activation with different free and monthly\/annual pricing plans available<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Access to billing information and invoices<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Different ways of importing recipients<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Email template customization from +260 ready-made HTML templates<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creating, scheduling, and sending an email campaign<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Access to basic analytics on recipient lists and sent campaigns<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Live chat and email support<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The possibility to cancel a plan<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Integration with these tools:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Helpscout<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for our knowledge base articles, live chat, and email support<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Stripe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to manage payments<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Bee Plugin <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to customize email templates<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Google Contacts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Google Sheets<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to import recipients<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Technology<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gumbamail has the complexity of being a <strong>built-in extension on a third-party domain<\/strong> (Gmail, no less). This meant we had to comply with browser limitations when it comes to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/wiki\/CORS_Enabled#What_is_CORS_about.3F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CORS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well as the specific security measures the Chrome Extension store lays down for all its extensions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the technological overview Gumbamail is based on:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Loading<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Normally, to launch an extension on a browser you would insert it as a browser action, a page action, a context menu, or an omnibox key. But, since Gumbamail is embedded in Gmail, we used a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inboxsdk.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">specific library<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for it. This enables loading when the user logs in into their Gmail account and it also makes the Gumbamail menu visible on Gmail.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Frontend<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Gumbamail includes the elements a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/developer.chrome.com\/docs\/extensions\/mv2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manifest v2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> extension usually has (content and background scripts) on top of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/reactjs.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ReactJs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> framework and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/material-ui.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Material-UI library<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the user interface.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Backend<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: the usual tech stack Acumbamail also has, that is, Django as the framework and Python as the programming language.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Validation process<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once we completed the development and fundamental testing of the MVP, <strong>we tackled the prerequisites<\/strong> to validate the extension, which were:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creating a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/gumbamail.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">homepage<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Setting up and authenticating a Google Consent Screen to get access to Google\u2019s API to integrate with Google Contacts and Google Sheets. This process went smoothly and our consent screen was approved the following day<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting the extension validation process using a Developer Account<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carrying out usability testing\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Usability testing\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We made sure to <strong>conduct several user tests<\/strong> before actually launching the extension.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We carried out our user tests with <strong>three different groups<\/strong>: Group A for standard users, group B for UX\/UI designers in Growens, and group C for all managers of Growens\u2019 BUs. We collected the feedback we got from these tests and <strong>implemented some necessary changes<\/strong> such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Autocomplete forms and automatic saving for a smoother workflow<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changing texts to make them more readable and improving design elements such as dropdowns<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Challenges<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our biggest challenge in this phase was undoubtedly making sure all the integrated tools mentioned above were<strong> compatible with the security limitations of the browser<\/strong>. What\u2019s more, each new Chrome browser update usually includes more security limitations than the last, which means we need to stay on top of every requirement of the new versions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/groups.google.com\/a\/chromium.org\/g\/chromium-extensions?pli=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google Developer Forum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was most helpful to solve all questions that arose and a meeting point for developers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Chrome store optimisation<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Drawing up a strategy<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once all initial product development was set and ready, we started to <strong>build a marketing plan<\/strong> and strategy with the invaluable help of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pickaso.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pickaso<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an agency specialised in App Marketing and App Store Optimisation (ASO).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We wanted all of our communication and marketing strategy to be <strong>bilingual in both Spanish and English<\/strong>, this includes ASO on the Chrome Store and SEO for our website, all our onboarding video tutorials, automated email workflows and knowledge base, and providing customer service in both languages.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>KPIs<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To <strong>measure our progress<\/strong>, we have established the following KPIs:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visitors (6,836 so far, with a 15% monthly increase)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accounts created<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lists created<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sent campaigns<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Number of customers who purchase a payment plan<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Churn rate\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-213660\" src=\"https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Schermata-2021-05-18-alle-12.29.17.png\" alt=\"Gumbamail KPIs\" width=\"2490\" height=\"398\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Schermata-2021-05-18-alle-12.29.17.png 2490w, https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Schermata-2021-05-18-alle-12.29.17-300x48.png 300w, https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Schermata-2021-05-18-alle-12.29.17-1024x164.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Schermata-2021-05-18-alle-12.29.17-768x123.png 768w, https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Schermata-2021-05-18-alle-12.29.17-1536x246.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Schermata-2021-05-18-alle-12.29.17-2048x327.png 2048w, https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Schermata-2021-05-18-alle-12.29.17-70x11.png 70w, https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Schermata-2021-05-18-alle-12.29.17-1920x307.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2490px) 100vw, 2490px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>App store optimisation (ASO)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our first objective was obviously to be <strong>visible on the Chrome Web Stor<\/strong>e. Even though the product fulfilled its purpose \u2014sending an email marketing campaign on Gmail, bypassing Gmail daily sending limits\u2014 we were worried about the product not being polished enough. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is why we put a lot of effort into <strong>asking for feedback and reviews<\/strong> from our new customers and tech enthusiasts alike by giving them full access to the extension. We made sure to analyse this feedback and implement as many improvements as possible within the first months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other parts of our marketing plan that we have been working on are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Strengthening<\/strong> our Link Building strategy by writing some guest posts and adding links to both the Gumbamail home and the Chrome Store web page.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have kept on working on our homepage and created some <strong>product-led landing pages<\/strong> highlighting our features and the main differences (features, pricing) with our competitors.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Onboarding and customer support<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To ensure a smooth onboarding with the extension, we have created <strong>built-in video tutorials<\/strong> on the side menu bar of the extension itself so that they are visible when needed. Video tutorials cover the main functions of the extension: how to import recipients from a Google Spreadsheet, a .csv file, or Google Contacts, how to create an email campaign, and how to use the email editor choosing from a responsive template selection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides, we send out <strong>automated email workflows<\/strong> to guide the user through the entire process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our knowledge base is also embedded on the side menu, with an <strong>internal search bar<\/strong> to look for articles. We have used the Helpscout Docs feature to write our support articles, include relevant keywords to trigger searches, fix failed searches, and access analytics (number of visits, ratings\u2026).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for our customer support, our main channels to assist our customers are a <strong>live chat<\/strong> (also available from the main side menu) and email. We use Helpscout\u2019s Beacon and Mailboxes features respectively as well for this.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What&#8217;s next?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ever since we\u2019ve launched the app, we have <strong>reached 935 downloads<\/strong> and 85 customers have purchased a monthly or annual rate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We feel happy with our current results and we are excited to see what this year brings out for Gumbamail.
