As <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Fullstack Engineering Associate Manager<\/strong>, he leads a team of three within the Software Development department at BEE.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After meeting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.growens.io\/en\/growens-voices-parroco\/\">Sara<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.growens.io\/en\/growens-voices-yabre\/\">Yacouba<\/a>, let&#8217;s deep dive into the growth path of a young accounting graduate who chose to ditch balance sheets and <strong>found his way in coding<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Marcello, what brought you to join Growens?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Growens has literally been <strong>the offer you cannot refuse<\/strong>, but let\u2019s start from the beginning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I started working when I was still graduating, thanks to a university internship. Continuously seeking new challenges and growth, I ended up in Milan as a <strong>software engineer<\/strong> for an IT consulting firm. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I enjoyed the job a lot, but I was looking to shift my expertise to <strong>different programming languages and tools<\/strong>. Moreover, the commuting from my hometown Cremona to Milan was sucking away 3+ hours of my time every day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At that time Growens needed a developer for the <a href=\"https:\/\/beefree.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BEE business unit<\/a> with the exact skillset I was seeking to acquire, but still didn\u2019t have. And yet <strong>I was approached and offered a job<\/strong>, apparently because even without some of the hard skills required I was appealing as a person and a professional. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mind-blowing, right? And being able to work in my home city? The cherry on top. <strong>How could I refuse?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>It sounds like a great start. What is your job like, today?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First thing, <strong>I&#8217;m a Fullstack Developer<\/strong>, which means I\u2019m able to move freely between all the typical stacks of an application: frontend (the interface that is being used by customers), backend (the engine under the hood), and infrastructure (the machines that run it all).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But being a jack-of-all-trades as a developer wasn\u2019t enough, so just over a year ago I started to <strong>shift to a managerial role<\/strong>, focussing on the personal well-being and technical growth of our entire fullstack team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a challenging task for sure but I love challenges (more on this later), and <strong>I love to help people<\/strong>. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s honestly a great satisfaction to be able to guide and support someone and see them improve and thrive in their work.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_214280\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-214280\" style=\"width: 2560px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-214280 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/work3-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Marcello Garini &amp; the BEE team\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/work3-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/work3-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/work3-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/work3-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/work3-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/work3-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/work3-70x53.jpg 70w, https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/work3-1920x1440.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-214280\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marcello (center) with co-workers during a BEE team retreat.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Kids usually dream of being astronauts or archaeologists. Have you always known that you wanted to write code?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good question. In Italy, boys and girls are called to make a rather important choice in their learning path at 14 years of age, when they choose their high school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Honestly, as a 14-yo boy, <strong>I didn\u2019t know what I wanted to do<\/strong> as a grown-up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had been tinkering with computers for the past couple of years, taking them apart, reassembling them and starting to code a bit in C and Pascal. I was also an <strong>eager Maths student<\/strong> and I saw potential in Economics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, I ended up choosing a high school that had both, picking \u201cAccounting with a twist\u201d: an experimental course that had computer science lessons and more Math hours than usual. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After 5 years I realized that <strong>I was done with balance sheets<\/strong> and I enrolled in a Computer Science university. The rest is history.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What does your daily work entail?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a complex, fun and challenging mix of things. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On one hand, <strong>I still develop a lot<\/strong>, which might sound uncommon for a manager. Our Group culture is strongly based on continuous feedback, team discussion, and shared decision making, and even if we have a slight hierarchy <strong>we consider us all as peers<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This really creates <strong>a wonderful environment for people<\/strong> to work in, where everyone is trusted and can make an impact. But also requires managers to stay on top of their coding game, otherwise our contribution is useless.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, I spend my time in touch with the people entrusted to me, making sure <strong>they are happy and enjoy their work<\/strong>, and outlining with them their path of personal growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I also work with other Engineering Managers on higher level flows and processes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-214290 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/work1.jpg\" alt=\"Marcello Garini at a BEE event\" width=\"550\" height=\"550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/work1.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/work1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/work1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/work1-60x60.jpg 60w, https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/work1-70x70.jpg 70w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>What&#8217;s the best part of working at Growens?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The best thing about Growens is its focus on people<\/strong>. As I mentioned, I was invited to join Growens even if I was lacking some hard skills required (namely I didn\u2019t know React and I was a basic Python developer). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Growens moved past that and <strong>saw value in me<\/strong>, giving me the time to acquire my missing skills and allowed me to quickly bloom in my job.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, as a people manager, I can only hope to give back to other colleagues this care I received.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Last but not least, what does Marcello look like in his private time?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talking about indoor activity, <strong>I am a regular guy<\/strong>: I enjoy reading, especially fantasy and sci-fi books, playing video games, most likely story-driven action\/adventure\/roleplay games, and watch TV series.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the thing that usually draws attention is my sport, <strong>Parkour<\/strong>. Yes, the one where we jump and climb all over the place. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I know it sparks interest because, generally, Parkour is seen as an extreme sport, with reckless practitioners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-214276\" src=\"https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/marcello-garini-growens.jpeg\" alt=\"Marcello Garini - Parkour\" width=\"960\" height=\"641\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/marcello-garini-growens.jpeg 960w, https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/marcello-garini-growens-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/marcello-garini-growens-768x513.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.growens.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/marcello-garini-growens-70x47.jpeg 70w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, that couldn\u2019t be farther from the truth, because it\u2019s a discipline with <\/span><strong>self-growth and safety<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> as core pillars<\/strong>. Parkour is about finding obstacles and challenges and overcoming them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It requires training body and mind alike.
